Mercer’s Tony Wood named in Outstanding 100 LGBT+ Executives Role Model list for fourth consecutive year

London, 10 November 2021

Tony Wood, Mercer Marsh Benefits’ Regional Leader, Continental Europe, has been named in the OUTstanding 100 LGBT+ Executives List for the fourth consecutive year. This year, Mr Wood is listed no 64 in the ranking compiled by INvolve in partnership with Yahoo Finance UK. INvolve is a not-for-profit professional network for LGBT executives and their allies that helps member firms create inclusive workplaces. This accolade recognises executives who help make the workplace more welcoming for LGBT+ individuals.

“I’m thrilled to be recognised by INvolve in this year’s OUTstanding list, together with so many inspirational executives who play such vital roles in driving workplace diversity and inclusion,” said Mr Wood. “I take being a role model seriously and endeavor to use my position to continually raise awareness of the challenges faced by the LGBT+ community. At MMB, we understand the importance of building an inclusive culture where people can be their authentic self and feel supported in all aspects or their working life. We believe diverse teams achieve better outcomes and longer-term success.”

Mr Wood has served as executive sponsor of Mercer’s LGBT+ Pride group in the UK for the past six years and has contributed significantly to the growth of the network and to creating an inclusive workplace. During 2020 and 2021, he and the network helped Mercer improve trans healthcare benefits, introduced gender neutral toilets, use of gender neutral language and explicit LGBT+ examples in all HR policies, dual photo ID cards and the use of pronouns in email signatures. Mr Wood also facilitated the launch of a guide for Mercer and client’s employees on issues associated with expatriate assignments for LGBT+ employees in countries that are not LGBT+ friendly. Mr Wood is often invited to speak on LGBT+ topics at events and conferences. Recent keynotes include an event with BUPA Global focusing on inclusivity in the workplace, a European Pride event on better allyship and a global pride event LGBT rights around the world.

Suki Sandhu, Founder & CEO, INvolve, said: “I’m thrilled to be celebrating this trailblazing group of global LGBT+ and Ally Role Models who are championing inclusion and inspiring the next generation of talent. It’s vital that the LGBT+ community can succeed and be authentic in business and beyond, and these Role Models are essential in dismantling barriers to progression and creating opportunities for LGBT+ employees to thrive.”

How the list was compiled:

All of the 2021 Role Models were nominated by peers and colleagues or put themselves forward for consideration. Every Role Model submitted an application outlining the work they have done for LGBT+ inclusion in business. Submissions were then reviewed by OUTstanding’s judging panel, consisting of: Ashok Vaswani, Global Consumer and Payments Head, Barclays; Harriet Green, Former Chairman & CEO IBM Asia Pacific; Dawn Airey, Independent Director, Grosvenor Estates GBI; Jim Fitterling, CEO of Dow Inc; Suki Sandhu OBE, Founder & CEO, INvolve & Audeliss; Lianna Brinded, Head of Yahoo Finance UK.

Each person was scored on their impact on LGBT+ inclusion inside and outside the workplace, their business achievements, and the seniority and influence of their role. Everyone featured in the lists has given their explicit permission to be included. For the 100 LGBT+ Executives and 50 Ally Executives, the nominee’s seniority and influence was taken into consideration. They must also be visibly out, or a vocal ally, actively working to create an environment where LGBT+ people can comfortably bring their best professional selves to work. It was important that people were working towards this goal above and beyond their day job, which made it hard for the judges to consider diversity and inclusion professionals, however deserving.
