Mercer’s UK Head of HR makes Top 100 OUTstanding LGBT Business Leaders List

Mercer’s UK Head of HR and Board Member, Dr Siobhan Martin, has made the Top 100 OUTstanding LGBT Business Leaders List. The ranking is compiled by OUTstanding, a not-for-profit professional network for LGBT executives and their allies, in collaboration with the Financial Times, and aims to recognise the actions of executives that have sought to make the workplace more welcoming to LGBT individuals. Dr Martin was nominated by colleagues in the UK chapter of Mercer’s own lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allies (LGBTA) Employee Network.

“I am immensely proud of this achievement, which in reality is the result of a great team effort,” said Dr Martin. “I am pleased to say I work for a company that not only acknowledges the importance of a workplace that is welcoming and supporting for everyone, but also takes an active role in ensuring it happens. Working with an engaged and committed team is what makes these moments possible.”

Dr Martin has been named on the list* as a result of her vocal and proactive championing of LGBT rights both within Mercer and on its behalf across the business and faith communities. She has been instrumental in driving cultural change at Mercer, writing the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion strategy (D&I) as well as creating its UK D&I council and advisory groups, ensuring issues of particular importance to LGBT staff are addressed.  Dr Martin is also Global Chair of the Business Innovation work stream of Mercer’s global LGBT network. She is a strong supporter of Stonewall, a Parochial Church Council member of All Hallows by the Tower and an Advisory Board Member for the Professional Women’s Network, ensuring that lesbian and bisexual women's needs and issues are represented.

OUTstanding founder Suki Sandhu said: “We need publically visible role models in business to show that the workplace welcomes all talented people, regardless of their backgrounds or identities. This is a human, rather than an LGBT issue which is why we’re also celebrating those trailblazers outside the LGBT community who promote the issue of diversity within their businesses.”

*How the list was compiled:
Those on the list were nominated by peers and colleagues. All nominations were reviewed by OUTstandings Advisory Panel before being ranked based on five factors, outlined below. Everyone included in the list has given their permission to be included.

1.      What activities have you undertaken to make the workplace a more welcoming place for LGBT individuals?

2.      What activities have you been involved in outside of the workplace to help affect positive change for LGBT people? E.g. Are you an active member of Stonewall? HRC? Or do you support similar organisations?

3.      What is your seniority and influence within the business? How many employees do you manage? What is the size of your P&L?

4.      Tell us about your recent and significant business achievements.
