What’s different about the Academy?

We recognise the changing needs of our clients as the world around us shifts, which is why we’ve completely reinvented our training programmes for new starters! The Academy aims to equip the new generation with the skills required to be able to advise clients and consumers on their specific challenges. We want to give our newest colleagues the best shot at being the greatest consultants they can be. With that in mind, there are two key elements about the Academy training programme that make it unique:

1) The Academy members will be helping our existing teams deliver a broad range of potential solutions across trustee and corporate clients. This means that in addition to helping out the Scheme Actuary, they will also be working alongside the investment consultant, Defined Contribution consultant and a range of other experts to understand all aspects of what we are delivering to our clients.

2) The Academy members will be immersed in a training programme designed to nurture the softer skills required to make the best consultants, as well as build the technical foundations required. In addition to working towards a professional qualification one day a week, members are also expected to spend around 20% of their time focusing on their development. The programme will nurture core skills like communication, strategic thinking, innovation and adaptability. It will involve face-to-face sessions and workshops as well as the use of technology to deliver an interactive virtual experience.

Similar changes are being made to existing graduate programmes to ensure that those who joined our business prior to the creation of the Academy will get to benefit from this great programme too.

Who made up the 2019 Academy?

The Academy colleagues were based in 8 locations across the UK and work together as a national team. Half of the 2019 Academy were school leaver apprentices and half were university graduates. Apprenticeships are not new to Mercer; we’ve been recruiting apprentices into our Wealth business for a number of years now. However, this was the first year we’ve recruited such a large cohort of apprentices alongside graduates. The result was an incredibly bright group of young people who came from a variety of backgrounds having studied a diverse range of subjects at college or university.

What professional qualifications are being offered in the Academy?

We are incredibly proud to be offering a Level 6 Financial Services Professional Apprenticeship following the Workplace Pension route which results in gaining the APMI accreditation. It’s great that we’re able to offer such a great alternative to University to some of the brightest young minds in the country!

University graduates will study for the IMC qualification initially and can then choose to pursue either the actuarial, CFA or PMI qualification.

Sounds great! How can I be part of this?

We’ve started recruiting for our 2020 Academy positions. Roles are available in various offices around the country and given the success of the Academy so far, we can’t wait to see what 2020 brings! To apply for a 2020 role, please see the following links below and get in touch:
